Children’s Tall Tale Short Story Writing Contest
Summer 2020


The Gardiner Library invites you to write a Tall Tale starting with this phrase,
“Dear Librarian,
            I could not return my book on time because…”
Finish this statement with a tall tale filled with exaggerations and outlandish characters to mesmerize our judges and entertain the librarians.

Contestants should be ages 11 and under
There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner in each category
-Submissions begin starting Monday, July 6, 2020

-Short stories can be up to 800 words 
-They will be judged on originality, use of language and technical skills
-All entries must be original, typewritten and submitted online
-One entry per author will be accepted

-Submissions must have authors name, address, phone#, email, age and approximate word count
-There is no entry fee
-All decisions of judges are final. Judges names will remain confidential until the end of competition to ensure fairness.

-Contest closes Friday, August 14, 2020 at 5 pm.
Prizes and certificates will be issued along with publication on the Gardiner Library website and publicity in local press.

The Gardiner Library invites you to participate in this historical-fictional mash-up!
Tall Tales are filled with exaggerations and outlandish characters. Be inspired by local history and community to create short story filled with fantastical intrigue.

Writers fall into two categories:
Adult, ages 18 and older
Teen, ages 12-17 years old
There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner in each category
-Submissions begin starting Monday, July 6, 2020

-Short stories can be up to 2,500 words in length
-They will be judged on originality, use of language and technical skills
-All entries must be original and type written and submitted online
-One entry per author will be accepted
-Submissions must have authors name or pen name, address, phone#, email and approximate word count

-There is no entry fee
-All decisions of judges are final. Judges names will remain confidential until the end of competition to ensure fairness.

-Contest closes Friday, August 14, 2020 at 5 pm.
Prizes and certificates will be issued along with publication on the Gardiner Library website and announcements in local press.
